Travel Basics

“An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered; an adventure is an inconvenience rightly considered."

- G.K. Chesterton

It's important to be clear from the get go, travel is not a vacation and vacations are not travel. We love vacations. We've had many very blissful ones. And when you're in the thick of a career, or the muddle of the child raisin' part of your life – vacations are about all you have time or energy for. So by all means, hit that all-inclusive resort in Mexico and get your Pina Colada on. You have our blessing.

Travel is something altogether different, but ultimately more rewarding. But make no mistake, it takes work to travel, and the shit will go sideways at some point, probably at many points.

Travel is to vacations as A Catcher in the Rye is to People Magazine. You pick up the latter when you need a break and a guilty pleasure. You pick up the former when you need a story.

Life is a story.

“Part of what makes roads, trails and paths so unique as built structures is they cannot be perceived as a whole, all at once, by a sedentary onlooker. They unfold in time as one travels along them, just as a story does as one listens or reads.”

-Rebecca Solnit Wanderlust
